22. Time - Changes Everything
Summary:
|
Mostly from Diana’s P.O.V.
Year 2048
It’s been almost seven years since I returned to
man’s world and more than five since I became Mrs.
Diana Wayne. Bruce said it was up to me, whether I
wanted to add Wayne after marriage. I had told him
that I was a member of the Wayne family now and
wanted to honor them just I had honored my mother by
becoming Wonder Woman.
It’s nearly 5 AM and I can hear Bruce walking up the
stairs. He seems to have returned early. Now that he
in invulnerable I can rest easy knowing that he
won’t come home injured and bleeding.
“You’re still awake?”
“I was waiting for you.”
He slides in bed and I snuggle upto him.
“Bruce”
“Hmmm….”
“Terri and Kara looked happy.”
“Yes. But wait until they have to stay up all night
on milk and diaper patrol.”
“But they are happy.”
“Yes, they are.”
“Bruce…”
“Yes Diana”
“I want us to be happy like that.”
He draws back, “Diana…are you sure?”
“Yes Bruce, I want us to have a baby.”
“Well, let’s start working towards making us happy”
he whispers pulling me closer and up on him.
Year 2080
Thomas is looking so handsome and Clara just as
beautiful. They make a great couple, almost as nice
as us, Bruce says.
He is still giving Clark a hard time. He is joking
that this marriage finally secures the bat-clan as
the first family of crime fighting.
Lois is getting old now and tires easily. But she is
as feisty as ever and just as Bruce was troubling
Clark, she was troubling him. He said to him, if
things had gone differently she would be have become
Lois Wayne and I would have been Diana Kent. Bruce
simply told that if that had been the case he would
have made a time machine himself and gone into the
past to kick his own butt for letting me go.
Back to the bride and groom. Clara is older than
Thomas. But being half kryptonian she should live
far longer than the average human. Thomas is not
immortal like Bruce or me, but still ages slower
than other humans. Maybe some aftereffect of the
magic in both of us.
I remember the day when Thomas used to get confused
by the twin sisters Clara and Lara. They used to
tease him. As they grew older the three became
friends. When Lara died Clara had been a train
wreck. Thomas had been there for her and helped her
to get back on her feet. Somewhere along the line
they grew closer. It was like Terri and Kara all
over again and I recalled something Kara had said.
She had said “There is something about the tall,
dark and silent types. It just pulls you in.”
As for me, I am still being pulled in by my Dark
Knight.
Year 2293
Two Hundred and Fifty years. That’s how long Bruce
and I have been married. We look exactly the same as
we did the day Alfred walked me down the aisle.
Alfred, good old Alfred, he is as immortal as us.
His body had changed over the years but the
conscious has been the same. The worst was when
Darkseid attacked the earth. His attack had
destroyed half of Gotham including the manor.
‘All’ the league reserves had been activated for the
first and only time to battle the New God. He had
been captured and imprisoned on his own planet in
his own prison. But the league suffered great
losses, including Thomas and Clara. I had been angry
and hurt. It was Bruce who finally calmed me.
Atleast they went together he said. We should take
consolation in that. I could see the pain in his
eyes. But he had remained strong for me. If was only
a year later that he had broken down and it had been
my turn to console him.
Everything changes with time. That is something we
are sure of. Being immortal doesn’t mean that time
doesn’t affect you. You lose old friends and family
members, but at the same time gain new ones. This is
a lesson we have learned with both great joy and
deep sorrow.
There is another thing both Bruce and me are sure
of. That is, no matter what happens, we will always
have each other.
